Far too many of our youth are being led into a life of drugs, alcohol and and other illicit activities simply as a result of being bored. Terry and Sharon Bell experienced the pain of losing a child to the lure of the streets. This in turn led to a succession of jail terms, rehab attempts, recoveries and relapses, all of which extended over a period of over 10 years until their son was killed in a motorcycle accident. Belle Chasse is a relatively affluent community, but the undercurrents run strong. Terry and Sharon longed to do something to provide an alternative for these young people. Exceleration Foundation was formed for that purpose. Their vision is to provide a place where our youth can go to recreate in a healthy, safe environment with sports activities, social gatherings, tutoring, mentoring and other uplifting, engaging activities being offered after school and on the weekends.
The Foundation has leased what was once a dilapidated warehouse on 3.1 acres of land. The land has been cleared and lawns prepared which are suitable for sports activities. The building has been largely renovated into a 6000 square foot open space building suitable for everything from basketball and dances to banquets.
Exceleration Foundation works closely with the District Attorney's Office of Plaquemines Parish, the 25th Judicial District Court Drug Court and provides community service opportunities for those that are required by the court to perform such service. We also encourage teens from the local high schools to fulfill their community service obligations by volunteering to serve at the foundation's events.
